Internet Safety

Introduction

Within this assignment you will learn and have the opportunity to teach someone about how to keep safe when using the Internet. You will then be able to use this knowledge in your future careers as teachers as you help keep your students safe when using the Internet and teach them about Internet safety.

Requirements

This assignment consists of three parts. First you will read a few articles and watch a few videos about internet safety, second you will will teach someone else about the things you have learned, and third, you will blog about the experience.

Reading & Watching

A) Read from the articles found in the resources section and watch videos from the resource section about Internet Safety. You can also look at some of the resources students have found useful in the past in our class Diigo group. Search for the tag “internet safety.”You should spend 90 minutes reading and viewing these sources.

Blogging

Ponder the reading questions, and on your blog tell us what articles/videos you read/watched and respond to a couple of these questions. Be sure to link to the sources you use so we can find them too!

  1. What were the most important things I learned from the readings?
  2. How will what I have read influence my actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?
  3. How can I use what I have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?
  4. Am I aware of the benefits and dangers children face when online with cyber bullying and online predators? Do I know how to prevent cyberbullying?
  5. Where can I go for information and resources that can be used to teach internet safety?
  6. What internet safety issues am I likely to face as a teacher and how will I address them?
  7. How can I leverage the power of the Internet so students can learn, but in a safe way?

Doing

To complete this part of the assignment you will need to work with a youth or parent (not a roommate). (This youth or parent could be your own parents, siblings, children, or spouse if you have children.) Then do the following:

  1. Find out what the youth or parent knows about one of the internet safety topics you have learned about.
  2. Share with the youth or parents what you have learned about the topic and share at least one resource you found with him/her on the topic.
  3. In your blog, describe (probably in a separate post from what you wrote above, although you could combine it):
    • who you talked with (no names are needed – just a brief description of age)
    • what you shared and how it went (was it positive? negative? hard? easy? valuable or not?)

Note: These two blog posts (one sharing your thoughts from the reading/videos, and the second explaining your visit with a youth or parent) will count as your blog participation for this week.

Alternative Activity

If you choose, you can complete an alternative activity, which is to become iSafe certified. This certification is something you can put on your resume. To become certified, click on the “i-Learn Online” page of the iSafe website and complete the iSafe certification process. It takes about 4-6 hours, which is why I am not requiring this activity for everyone. Teachers who have completed it have appreciated what they have learned, I have been told.

Note: This alternative activity is strongly recommended for Health teachers, as it will be a valuable credential for you when you go seeking a teaching position.
