Internet Safety

Introduction

In this assignment you will learn and have the opportunity others about how to keep safe when using the Internet. You will then be able to use this knowledge in your future careers as teachers as you help keep your students safe when using the Internet and teach them about Internet safety.

Requirements

This assignment consists of two parts. First you will read a few articles and watch a few videos about Internet safety, second you will write up an information page for your website teaching your students and their parents (in an engaging way) about how to be safe on the Internet and outlying the advice and “rules of thumb” you would give to them.

Reading & Watching

A) Read articles and watch videos on the Internet to teach you about Internet Safety. You can find these sources yourself or use resources from the resource section below. You can also look at some of the resources students have found useful in the past in our class Diigo group. Search for the tag “internet safety.” You should spend 60 minutes reading and viewing these sources.

Teaching

Ponder the following questions, and on your website create a page under the “information” section to teach students and their parents about Internet safety issues and how they can safely use the Web. Be sure to link to the sources you use so your students and parents can learn more! Also, part of your points for this assignment will be on how well you communicate and teach about this topic on this information page. You are welcome to embed video or media if you wish, but don’t let the media do the teaching that YOU should be doing (i.e. don’t just embed a video and say “watch this, it’s cool, and do what it says.”

Questions to consider:

  1. What were the most important things you learned from the readings that others should know?
  2. What guidelines do you think youth and parents should follow?
  3. Where can they go for information and resources?
  4. What internet safety issues are you likely to face as a teacher and how can you prevent them (as best as possible) and be prepared to address them?
  5. How can you leverage the power of the Internet so students can learn, but in a safe way?

Examples from past students
These are just some examples from students. Notice how they talk about different things. That’s ok. The point is to write up what YOU think is important for your students and parents to know, and this may change regularly.

Alternative Activity

If you choose, you can complete an alternative activity, which is to become iSafe certified. This certification is something you can put on your resume. To become certified, click on the “i-Learn Online” page of the iSafe website and complete the iSafe certification process. It takes about 4-6 hours, which is why I am not requiring this activity for everyone. Teachers who have completed it have appreciated what they have learned, I have been told.

Note: This alternative activity is strongly recommended for Health teachers, as it will be a valuable credential for you when you go seeking a teaching position.
