That&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/asu.edu\/budgetcuts\/\/\" title=\"ASU budget cuts\" target=\"_blank\">what is happening to Arizona State University<\/a>. According to the president:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;To deal with cuts of this magnitude, we would need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Layoff thousands more employees;<\/li>\n<li> Have a massive furlough of all remaining employees for two weeks or longer;<\/li>\n<li>Increase tuition and fees; (replacing the cuts by raising tuition alone would require a tuition rate of almost $11,000 for Arizona residents)<\/li>\n<li> Close academic programs.<\/li>\n<li>       Close a campus or possibly two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Wow. This is incredible. I worry that we are on the brink of dramatic changes to higher education that will not easily be reversed. <a href=\"http:\/\/jonmott.disqus.com\/crisis_wit_opportunity\/trackback\/\" title=\"Crisis comes opportunity\" target=\"_blank\">While with crisis comes opportunity<\/a>, that&#8217;s only if we can negotiate these challenges intelligently.
